October 20th was a wonderful and historic day in Cork, despite poor weather leading up to the ceremony, over a thousand people show up.
With Sliabh na mBan, the iconic Armoured Car parked close by, Rena Buckley, Jimmy Barry Murphy and Ronan O’Gara unveiled the new statue of the “Big Fella” just after 1 pm.
John Spillane’s new Michael Collins song and the music of the band of the 1st Brigade of the Army added so much to the occasion.
As Chairman of the Michael Collins 100 Committee I must thank. Everybody who made financial contributions to the Statue Fund. Everybody in Cork City Council who worked on the Statue Project.
The eight members of the Michael Collins 100 Committee who put huge work and commitment into the project over the last thirteen months.
Artist Tómas Tuipear for the fabulous design of the limestone surround.
Sculptor Kevin Holland for creating another wonderful Statue of Michael Collins.
The likeness takes your breath away and a number of people have said that no matter where you stand close to the statue the “Big Fella” seems to be looking at you.
If you have not seen it already, please take a bit of time and go to see the Statue.
