While the official Commemoration took place at Béal na Blá on Sunday, there was a people’s Commemoration at the ambush site last evening. There must have been a thousand people present at the monument at 8pm, at the moment one hundred years on that Michael Collins was shot.
Mayor of the County Cork Councillor Danny Collins gave a short speech and layed a wreath, Traolach Ó Donnabháin said a decade of the rosary and Ger O’Driscoll sounded the last post and national anthem on the trumpet.
The atmosphere was very special and there aren’t too many characters in history that would draw a thousand people to their place of death after a century like Michael Collins did last evening.
